Hitting any area causes it to freeze even more. Then the whole window turns white and nothing works. Eventually word resets itself and works again when documents are opened. The fix is to turn off hardware acceleration in Word's Options panel. Apparently Word's acceleration conflicts with Window's acceleration and causes the problem.

Or if the problem is currently happening that doesn't work. Instead, the customize toolbar dropdown arrow on top of screen , has an "more options" and that opens the Options popup too.

I found a fix and want to share it so others can find it! Go to Options. In Options, under Advanced, is a checkbox for "turn off hardware acceleration" I found the solution here, and am so grateful to them.
